CFO Buzz – week ending August 21, 2015

CFO BuzzCFO Buzz is a new feature capturing top stories affecting CFOs. This feature will be published Fridays so that CFOs can gain perspective over the weekend, allowing them to challenge themselves and think about how to improve their lives, careers and companies.

Here is this week’s CFO Buzz

1) Your team is killing your career.

We all rely on others for our success. As CFO, your team allows you to be the best CFO you can be. What happens when those you rely on are killing your career? What can you do about it?

2) Let’s play “Blame the CFO”

We have all seen companies fail. We may have been CFO at a company that failed. Do you have to worry about being publicly being blamed for the failure? Here are two articles on the Zirtual story from this week.

3) The All Powerful CFO

Every once and awhile, mainstream business press brings up the topic of how the role of the Chief Financial Officer is changing. What needs to be understood is that business is changing. All leadership roles are changing and expanding to deal with the new business reality. Everyone seems to want to know about the CFO. But do they want to know about you?

4) Do you purposely hire fraudsters?

A study shows evidence that companies like to hire accountants that are biased towards “earnings management” This reminds me of the old joke about the job interview where the accountant was asked “What’s one plus one?” Seriously though, this is an image issue the finance executives have to deal with.

5) Does your finance team run a 60+ hour work week?

Finance executives whose staff are running on significant overtime on a regular basis should be fired. Or if they can’t fix it, quit before they are fired.
