CFO Buzz – week ending September 18, 2015

CFO BuzzCFO Buzz is a news feature capturing top stories affecting CFOs. This feature is published Fridays so that CFOs can gain perspective over the weekend, allowing them to challenge themselves and think about how to improve their lives, careers and companies.

Here is this week’s CFO Buzz

1) The Vanishing CFO

I love following CFO Moves. It gives me an indication of many things that are going on behind the scenes at different companies. Considering that I work in CFO Executive Search, this information is pretty valuable. This story about CFOs in the Oil & Gas Industry and how many of them are leaving is a good analysis of what could be going on today in O&G companies.

2) The continuing challenges of hiring right

Neil Amato writes about the challenges finance leaders are having with recruiting, turnover, and business growth. Sometimes, taking a non-traditional approach to hiring and building a team can be very effective. There are solutions to the problems, but finance leaders need to be creative.

3) Being efficient can limit your career

I see this often in the finance leaders that I speak with. Too many are focused on continuing their technical brilliance, thinking that being efficient in their work will get them to the corner office, where in fact, all it does is gives them more technical work. Moving beyond the ‘just technical’ aspect towards true business leadership is where many finance professionals fail. Here is one perspective to keep in mind.

4) Learning from other CFOs

The more CFOs I speak with, the more I learn. I enjoy sharing some of my conversations in my CFO Success Stories. Here is one CFO interview that caught my attention this week.

5) Is an “Always-On” Finance Team a Good Thing?

Once upon a time work was done during work hours and ‘life’ happened outside. Today, the lines are so blurred, some people never turn off. As Finance leader, how sensitive are you to this issue for your team? Some food for thought here.
